Who are you and what are you doing with your life?
Those are some good questions that are helpful to examine once in a while. They are big motivators for me and things I do in my life.
Let’s look at the first question, who are you? For me, the list starts with mom, wife, daughter, teacher, healer, sister, woman, and so on. But while all those roles are important to me, they are just that, roles I play in my life. Some are longer-playing than others and some roles I no longer play. I am no longer an SQA Engineer, for example. I’m sure you can very quickly and easily come up with a list of your own.
Somewhere along the narrative of my life I became aware of my self-identification and the limits it puts on me. In my yoga class the teacher talked about developing “witness personality”, the ability to observe things happening to you from a neutral point of view. This, of course, brings up the question, who is doing the observing? As I delved deeper into my Reiki practice, the experience of the divine nature of that particular energy opened a different level of understanding. We are all divine beings, carrying the spark of divine light within.
Now, I am not exactly going to say “I am a diving being of light” if you ask me who I am out in public. Unless, of course, that’s the kind of relationship you and I have. Self-preservation is a powerful guide. But that internal knowledge, the internal knowing of that truth has been a huge help and influence on my life.
And here, we arrive to the other question, what are you doing with your life? Well, I am exploring what it means in this world, living as a divine being of light. How can that knowledge inform my choices in life? And I don’t mean just big choices, like what I do for a living, what kind of home I live in, what food I eat, what kind of parent I am. But the little choices as well, what do I spend my money on, what consumables do I consume, how much stuff I buy in general, how do I conduct myself, how do I reply to criticisms and praise. It’s not always easy and this road is full of mistakes and things that could have been done differently in retrospect. But this is an interesting journey, embodying the divine light in this physical reality.
I invite you to join in and explore those two questions for yourself. I would love to hear your thoughts, please feel free to comment or send me a quick email.
